Salalaug – A Family-Friendly Swimming Pool in Kópavogur
Salalaug is a modern public swimming pool in Kópavogur, just a few minutes from Reykjavík. Popular with both locals and visitors, it offers a 25-metre outdoor pool, warm indoor pool, hot tubs, water massage facilities, exciting water play features, and two brand-new saunas.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing soak in geothermal water, a place to swim laps, or a fun outing with the family, Salalaug has something for everyone.
25-Metre Outdoor Pool
The main outdoor pool measures 25 x 15 metres and features six swimming lanes. It is used for lap swimming, swimming lessons, and recreational swimming, with dedicated lanes available for fitness swimmers during public opening hours.
Hydrotherapy Pool
One of Salalaug’s highlights is its hydrotherapy pool, equipped with water and air massage jets that target the calves, lower back, hips, shoulders, and upper back. The pool also features three heated air massage loungers, providing a relaxing spa-like experience.
Warm Indoor Pool
The indoor pool is kept at a comfortable temperature of 33–34°C (91–93°F), making it ideal for babies, young children, and anyone who prefers warmer water. Baby changing facilities are available in both the pool area and the changing rooms.
Unique Water Slide
Salalaug’s water slide offers a different experience from most others. The ride begins in a small 34°C (93°F) warm pool before flowing into a gentle water channel that winds around an island and returns swimmers to the staircase. It’s a favourite attraction for children and families.
Hot Tubs
The pool area includes two geothermal hot tubs. One is maintained at approximately 38°C (100°F) for comfortable relaxation, while the hotter tub reaches around 42°C (108°F).
New Sauna Experience
Salalaug recently added two beautiful wood-clad saunas to its wellness facilities.
The traditional Finnish sauna features a stone heater with an automatic water system. At the push of a button, water is released onto the hot stones every 90 seconds, increasing both the heat and humidity for an authentic sauna experience.
The second is an infrared sauna, where infrared heat warms the body directly rather than heating the air. It offers a gentler, dry-heat experience that many visitors find especially relaxing.
Water Play Area
Families with children will enjoy the water play area, featuring 40 water jets that spray to different heights and create a fun and interactive environment for younger visitors.
Whether you’re exploring Reykjavík, staying in Kópavogur, or looking to experience Iceland’s famous swimming pool culture, Salalaug is an excellent place to swim, relax, and enjoy authentic Icelandic geothermal bathing.
